Inaugural Salt to Dust Western Queensland Traditional Owner Workshop

Traditional Owners and Indigenous land managers from across western Queensland came together recently for the Inaugural Salt to Dust Western Queensland Traditional Owner Workshop.

Held at Dugalunji Camp, Camooweal in June 2009, this workshop was the result of collaboration between Southern Gulf Catchments, Desert Channels Queensland and South West NRM, bringing together Traditional Owners and providing a forum to build capacity, network and learn from a diverse range of presenters about issues, initiatives and research that support Traditional Owners’ participation in and decision-making about country, culture and community.

NatureAssist offers cash incentives to landholders

NatureAssist is for rural Queensland landholders to help sustainably manage their land, conditional upon them entering into a nature refuge agreement. NatureAssist is a competitive market-based incentive scheme that gives landholders throughout rural Queensland the opportunity to tender for financial assistance to carry out on-ground management actions that will maintain or enhance their property’s conservation values.  Expressions of interest must be submitted by 16 March 2009 (5pm AEST). Landholders can express their interest by completing a simple one-page expression of interest form available at www.epa.qld.gov.au/naturerefuges or by calling the EPA Customer Service Centre on 1300 130 372.

South West NRM Ltd was established to support practical action by landholders, community, Landcare groups, Traditional Owners, local government and Industry groups at a regional scale on one hand; and manage NRM investment from Australian and State governments on the other. The key principle behind the regionalisation of natural resource management is that decisions should be made by people close to the source and the context of the issues so to ensure environmental sustainability occurs in an economically, socially and culturally appropriate manner.

As a community-based company, South West NRM Ltd’s vision is reflective of its community values and priorities for natural resource management in the region.

"The community working together to build a healthy, sustainable,
attractive and profitable South West Queensland, through
the effective management of our natural resources".

A strong commitment to community consultation and participation is demonstrated through the South West NRM Ltd Board of Directors, Community NRM Forums, focus groups and the development of the Regional Natural Resource Management Plan (NRM Plan).
